Parents are Trying to Keep their Kids Safe

In a February 22, 2017 article from ABC News, Young Center Director Maria Woltjen challenged the idea that parents who seek to protect their children from extreme violence by sending them to the United States are trafficking their own children. That idea—and other misunderstandings about the factors that drive children to migrate thousands of miles on extremely dangerous journeys—appears in two memos about increased immigration enforcement put out by the Department of Homeland Security this week. The DHS memos indicate that the federal government intends to dramatically scale back, or even eliminate, some of the very few protections that exist for migrant children, putting them in even greater danger.  Read the article at: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/items-dhs-memos-raise-flags-immigrant-rights-advocates/story?id=45656414 and join the Young Center’s efforts to ensure that the federal government recognize that migrant children are, first and foremost, children.
