Komi's Story

The Young Center was appointed to Komi*, a child from an ethnically-mixed family in a West African country. The ethnic groups of Komi’s family have been in conflict for the past century. Because of the strategic location of his family’s land, both groups repeatedly reached out to Komi to recruit him, but he refused. As a result, he was repeatedly tortured and threatened. His reports to the local police were ignored. He had no other option than to flee for safety. Because of the harm Komi faced at the hands of non-state actors, he was granted asylum. Under the proposed rule, he would have been returned to harm.
