The Waymaker Cocktail with Quinn Cummings

We created this cocktail on the occasion of our 2020 Be A Waymaker New York Benefit. It is called the Waymaker Cocktail to honor the volunteer Young Center Child Advocates who meet with unaccompanied and separated immigrant children in government custody every week and help us advocate for their rights and best interests. They help create the path to safety for immigrant children. Here’s Oscar-nominated actress and critically acclaimed author Quinn Cummings walking us through the recipe using Aviation Gin.

Ingredients

  • 6-8 mint leaves

  • 3/4 ounce lime juice (fresh is best, but use what you have!)

  • 1 ounce simple syrup (super easy to make, or available in stores)

  • 1 1/2 ounces Aviation gin

  • 5 ounces ginger beer (or enough to fill, the spicier the ginger beer, the better!)

What to do with them

  1. Muddle mint, lime, simple syrup in shaker.

  2. Add ice & gin.

  3. Shake it like a Polaroid picture. 😊

  4. Strain over ice in a copper mug if you have one or in any glass you like.

  5. Top with ginger beer.

  6. Garnish with mint leaves & lime slice.

For a refreshing non-alcoholic version, just skip the gin!

Story of the Waymaker: Years ago, the Young Center had the honor of serving a girl from West Africa. When she was successfully released from custody, settled in, and enrolled in high school, she sent a letter to her Child Advocate, thanking her for being her Waymaker. We love that word. Today, as many children continue to be separated from their families and those who arrive on their own are deported to danger, we need more Waymakers than ever.
