Young Center Statement on the Insurrection in Washington, D.C.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C., January 7, 2021—We are horrified and sickened, though not surprised, at the insurrection launched at our democracy yesterday. It was the fruit of a long, sustained campaign of lies and sabotage grounded in racism and hate. Against members of our Black, Indigenous, people of color, immigrant, and Jewish communities. Against women, the LGBTQ community, against people with disabilities. Against people who are the heart, soul, and intellect of this organization: our staff, the children we serve, their families, our families. That campaign didn’t begin four years ago; it started well more than four hundred years ago. And what happened over the last four years was not one person’s responsibility, but the responsibility of everyone who enabled him, whether actively or by staying silent. In response, we will continue our work of fighting for a democracy where the rights of all people—and especially all children—are honored, valued, and respected.
