Supporter Spotlight: Hoa Huynh and Sunny Yoon

Hoa Huynh and Sunny Yoon bonded over their cultural pride and in overindulging in Asian cuisines, all of which led to the birth of their e-commerce store WE ARE CHIMMI. Their parents were refugees and immigrants to the United States who showed them the value of hard work in the face of adversity.

WE ARE CHIMMI short for "We Are Children of Immigrants," sells accessories and donates 10% of profits from sales to organizations supporting immigrants and marginalized communities. They've raised funds for unaccompanied immigrant children as the Young Center was one of the recipients of their generosity.

Hoa and Sunny sat down with us to tell us why their business supports community efforts.

Tell us a little bit about how you learned about the Young Center?

We both have a desire to help people and when we started our business, we built in a long-term plan to donate 10% of our profits from sales to organizations that supported immigrants and marginalized communities. We discovered the Young Center when we started doing research on possible organizations that helped immigrant communities around the United States. We learned about the Young Center’s commitment in advocating for the safety and rights of unaccompanied children and we knew we wanted them to be our first nonprofit to support.

What has your involvement been like?
We saw the passion and commitment the Young Center had for helping immigrant children and we knew immediately we wanted to support such a good cause. Our involvement has been very rewarding knowing we are bringing attention to the difficulties unaccompanied immigrant children are faced with when they arrive at the border. Through our e-commerce store, we are building community and raising awareness of these issues by selling Children of Immigrant t-shirts and sharing stories.

What is one thing you’d like everyone to know about the Young Center’s work?
I would like people to know that the Young Center is focusing on an issue that many people are not discussing or advocating for today. Children being detained at the border and separated from their families is morally wrong. The Young Center recognizes this problem and works each day to fight against it by advocating for their safety and best interests.

What’s your dream for immigrant children?

We want immigrant children to have the same opportunities as all children and have better lives for themselves.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

We are thankful for organizations like the Young Center that focus on helping unaccompanied immigrant youth. We need more organizations like yours!
