Washington D.C.— The Young Center is deeply alarmed to see updated news reports that the White House is seriously considering harmful tradeoffs that would further restrict asylum, expand expedited removal, detain families, and revive Title 42 in exchange for more military funding for Ukraine and Israel. We strongly reject any proposal that threatens the safety and unity of immigrant families and urge the Biden Administration and Congress to oppose these and other anti-immigrant, anti-asylum policies as part of the ongoing supplemental funding negotiations.

Mary Miller Flowers, Director of Policy and Legislative Affairs at the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, said:
It is inexcusable that the Biden Administration and Congress are considering trading our nation’s values for political ends. Many of the policies currently under consideration by the White House are ones that policymakers already rightfully opposed under the Trump administration and then worked to overturn–both because they are harmful to families and because they have proven ineffective in deterring migration.
Congress must urgently reject these egregious proposals in ongoing supplemental funding negotiations and support humane, child and family-centered solutions. Families and children’s lives depend on it.”
