Young Center Responds to Presidential Election Results and Prepares to Fight Back

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This morning, Republican nominee and former President, Donald Trump was officially declared the winner of the United States Presidential Election with 51% of the vote. Gladis Molina Alt, Executive Director at the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights released the following statement:

“Today, we stand with the millions of immigrant children, youth, and families who will be adversely impacted by the policies of the incoming administration, as this news casts a dark shadow over their lives and futures. These results serve as a painful reminder that we must not underestimate the power that harmful lies and hateful narratives can have in convincing voters that our immigrant communities are less than human through a systematic campaign worth billions of dollars. Let’s be clear: these results reflect over 8 years of anti-immigrant extremists deceiving voters by dehumanizing, criminalizing, and attacking immigrants for strategic political gain, to divide our country and turn us against each other. We cannot allow this to continue.

Under a Trump 2.0 Administration, we anticipate an escalated and unprecedented assault on the basic human rights of refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented immigrants, as well those who have already obtained legal status. These assaults will entail family separations, immigration raids across the country in collaboration with local law enforcement, closing of the Southern border to asylum seekers and refugees, travel bans, and denying citizenship to U.S. born children of immigrants. None of these proposals are acceptable or popular amongst the American people. Nor do they address the root problems of our broken immigration system. As advocates, we are still picking up the pieces from Trump’s atrocious first term and will hold the line once again.

The next four years will not be easy, but as the Young Center, we have been here before and are no strangers to fighting back against President Trump's cruel and extreme anti-immigrant policies. We will not give up, we will continue to fight back and protect those who need us most, because that is what immigrant children, and their families deserve.”
